On my way to Kashgar, I stop over at Turpan, which is just a few kilometres from Urumqi and where it is possible to catch a train to Kashi. I took a sleeper train from a city close to Dunhuang (Liuyuan Train Station, 150kms/3hours away by shared minibus). I arrive at Turpan at around 4.30am, there is very little activity in this station and it was still dark so I sleep a little in the station to wait for the sun to rise. I wake up three hours later and I was surrounded by people watching me. The station was now full of people talking loud and waiting for there train to come. I go out of the station, and I feel that I have left China already. It is a completely a new landscape, people, food. I go to town sharing a taxi but the way back was a little bit of a nightmare.

I must be the only foreigner they have seen for ages or ever by the way people look at me at Liuyuan Train Station. A massive paiting representing the Silk Road is in front of me on the waiting area. I am on my way Turpan, another oasis in the middle of the desert and from where I can catch a train to Dunhuang. Since I still have some spare time and I feel inspired by this beautiful paining, I start writing some notes about the trip. Suddenly I look back over my shoulders. Very close to me and right above my left shoulder was a woman looking at me writing. I jump a little on my seat from the surprise and she start laughing.
